Anyone else expect Jack to yell "Daddy!" and have a big hug from Tom? Maybe Jack and Tom are role playing to help Jack work through his Daddy issues.

Did Tom put on wait?

Damn, Lost is delivering the goods since the break. Another great episode- seems like the previous Claire episodes were also pretty good. I find myself much more sympathetic to her character after last night, which I guess is what the writers were going for, in part.

Jack Shepard. The guy gets around. How many Lost characters has he come in contact with, or fathered for that matter? Jack and Claire, Ana Lucia, Sawyer, hmmm, am I missing anyone?

Locke, what is your deal? Can't wait to hear you guys talk about what you think is going on with Locke. So he obviously knew about the C4 before the Flame blew. I guess it's remotely possibly he could have found another piece of C4 lying around. So did he blow the place on purpose? It does seem pretty convenient that it blew after they all reached a safe distance away. And what up with pushing Mikhail through the security system?

Geez, so many questions. Seems like that sonar beacon is a pretty big deal for finding the island, and the damn list is up again. My guess is that Jack is playing along with Tom and gang, figuring out his next move. Of course for all we know, he may think he's counting his days on the island until Ben sends him home; or he could be bangin' Juliette. How awesome would that have been if Kate and gang walked up on Jack and Juliette mackin' in the little gazebo?

Brownie - You mean Christian Shephard. He and Jack probably met Boone and Shannon when Mr. Rutherford died.

How long before we see Christian training Juliet and Ethan

Mekareq - I think the football catch was a plug for Matthew Fox's movie Marshall

Question
According to Desmond, it is impossible to leave the island yet how do the birds know how to find and leave the island?

Funniest line of the episode from Locke: "Pardon me for not knowing they had a sonic weapon fence!"

Well he might not have known that but they knew it was probably dangerous and he still pushed Patchy in it. I think there's an ulterior motive here, since Patchy was about to reveal that Locke had been paralysed.

He lied about the C4 and wanted to kill Patchy, even though this would be execution (Others style) not self defense. Wow, Locke's getting all dark now. You never know what he's going to do next!

Jack and Tom: best buddies? I don't think so.

@Bruce- haha, yeah, definitely meant Christian, not Jack. That's what eating too many, ahem, brownies will do for you! Also, forgot all about the Boone and Shannon connection. And excellent point about the birds, had not really thought about that.

@Julia- agreed, that line by Locke was great. Also, I think you're on to something in regards to Locke's motivation for pushing Mikhail.

Okay, I was sure that someone else would bring this up... But I give up.

Did anyone else notice that they tied *a piece of paper with writing on it* to the leg of a bird whose leg is *under water* a lot of the time?* I was expected a baggie to keep the water, or an ingenious harness, or something.

First time that bird gets tired and rests in the water, that beautiful little poem thing is going to be so much smeared ink!

Sorry, that's probably not something that needed to be brought up, but did I miss something??

omg, I know, and what a long letter for such a small peice of paper! I think its just another hopeless attempt that even the writers didn't take seriously. It's not like they'll get off the island in season three anyway. next time on Lost: they'll try a message in a bottle! :-P (Well, I think it would be cute...)

I just remembered another problem I had with this episode... why did Desmundo shoot the gun in the first place? It seems like if he had just let her catch a bird in the net, no one would need to keep trying to catch one, and slip on rocks and die. And it seemed like he was protecting Claire, not Charlie...

Someone of these responses are from comments in the previous post:

Curt,

Succession might come soon enough.

Mekareq,
I can answer both of your questions with one word. "How cool is Sayid/How lame is Locke?" VERY!

Locke is starting to get the to point, no, he's AT the point, where I want to physically harm him over the stupid crap decisions he's making. It really feels like he's trying to sabotage things. I really thought Kate was going to slap him in this episode. I know Sayid is really wishing he didn't make that promise to never torture any one again.

Carty,

It was nice to see a raven Claire. It looked good on her. She actually did the whole goth-arty-tatoo artist thing well. Too bad that was the past. She still definitely sucks these days. Though I will give her exactly 1 ounce of credit for the bird-mail thing.

Bruce,

I think your theory almost makes sense. But I can't see how Christian would know to bribe the psychic. And it doesn't explain why the psychic didn't want to do the reading at first and all of that nonsense. Plus I don't see him want to adopt a baby when he's at the end of his life due to his serious depression and alcoholism. Though that premise would make a good sitcom. "My Drunken Daddy and Me"

As for the list and the C4, Justin and I will surely talk about that. But Malcolm is right, they need that for something in the future.

Jeri,

Par avion means "by plane." So the only connection I can think of it the message by bird, and the part of Claire's note where she says how they got to the island, "by plane." And avion is similar to aviary, which relates to birds. It's all Latin.

Brownmeister,

Don't get caught up in sympathy for Claire! Because if you sympathize with Claire, then it's only a small step to sympathize with Charlie, which is a stone's throw away from sympathy for Hurley, and we all know that leads to hell.

Julia,

VERY good point about Locke's motives for pushing Mickey into the fence.

Mekareq,

I was thinking the same thing. I totally expected them to wrap it in a plastic baggie.

Fefe,

Welcome! The whole thing with Desmond didn't make sense. He claims that if he didn't scare the birds away, Charlie would have gone to the rocks to capture a bird. But how would Charlie have known a bird was there? And why does he think Clarie wouldn't be successful in catching one on her own?

-----------------------------------

I'm really tired of Charlie "dying" for Claire. I think they are making a point of that. All three times Desmond saw Charlie die, Claire was involved.

...Women!!!

I think that 'par avion' is used to refer to "air mail," so it could go either way...anyway, I have made it my personal venture of the weekend to submit the longest post so that it will be seen: quote, "I'm looking at you, Justin" I should have known that Claude would have not only read my post, but reply to it, too. Kidding aside, guys, I truly enjoy your podcasts. I will leave it to you to decide if I am male or female, the name "Jeri" can go either way, but - I have been on the Frapper since way before I started posting. I just finished listening to the 'par avion' podcast, yes, all 4 1/2 hours. I will weigh in on the side of Sawyer looking best in the ponytail, partly because his is an original spin on a traditional pony, giving him a few points for creativity. Kate wears one because most all women with long hair do, and Sayid's is strictly functional. Now, Desmond's hair would look good on whatever style, so he can't be considered. You guys take notes while watching the episode, but I feel I should take notes while I listen to you to give feedback. I hesitate to post mid-listen though, because you may go in another direction at some point and negate the posting chain of thought, if you know what I mean. OK, now even I am tiring of the length here. One question for you two: Do you record your podcasts all at once, or edit? Lost Lowdown secret? I think that I have met my quota. Looking forward to the next exegesis from LLD. (points, please)

To support the Claire coming to L.A. to give Christian her baaaabeee.

It is obvious that Christian has kept track of Claire and her mom. He knew through "contacts" when they were in the car accident. I strongly believe he went to Australia, **specifically** because he knew Claire was pregnant. Considering his wealth and need to control situations, it is not a huge leap for him to have had a paid "contact" find out she was planning to give up the baby or that she sought out this psychic. After Aunt Lindsey would not let him see Claire, he sought out the psychic, paid him $10,000 (the Hugo-Psychic amount) to send Claire to L.A. so he could adopt his grandson.

As to Christian's age, we know he is still working so lets assume he is about 60. Despite being an alcoholic his life expectency should at least get Aaron into his teen years and his wife would probably outlive him and see Aaron into adulthood.

Jeri,

I'll admit that I've always thought you were a woman. But you have brought doubt into my mind by posing the idea that you might not be. I can't find you on the frappr. Not under "Jeri" at least. The only Jeri I know (or personally) is Jeri Ryan, Seven of Nine on Star Trek Voyager. That's who I'm picturing when I see your posts...

[Likewise, I picture 420Brownie as a huge floating brownie, who is somehow able to watch LOST and listen to podcasts and post comments by its sheer coolness alone.]

I love the idea that Desmond's hair is so nice that it can't be considered. I think I agree.

As far as recording, it's not a secret. (we just don't tell anyone!) j/k

We record all of our podcasts straight through, real-time. (There was one exception, where we started late and it was like 3am and we were losing track of what we couldn't make coherent statements so we stopped and picked it up the next day)

Now, in your average 4 or 5 hour podcast, we might take a 5 minute break or two. We sometimes get interrupted/bathroom/water break etc.

For the curious, this is how we record:

Justin is in Indiana and I'm in LA, so we have to talk to each other on our cell phones. That's why you'll her us talk over each other more than if we were in the same room (i.e. we can't see when the other person is about to speak).

I think this adds an extra interesting element to the podcast, since Justin and I can only hear each other, just like you guys can only hear us.

For the actual recording, we use a program called Audacity. So I record my audio on my computer, and he records his audio on his computer. One of us sends our audio to the other (we take turns editing) and the audio is then lined up, the breaks and screw-ups taken out. Set to bake at 400 and an hour later we have a podcast!

Justin in out of town in NYC, that's why he hasn't commented this week. If you're in NYC and see someone who looks like they like LOST and looks like they do a podcast, it might be him. (Approach with caution.)

For "exegesis" I have to give you like 9 points. Unfortunately, Justin is really the point giver-outer, and knowing him he'd give you 2.

Okay Bruce, you seem pretty set on this Christian thing. I don't want to say too much 'cause I want to bring it up on the podcast and see what Justin says.

But here's a question, if Christian paid the psychic to get her to LA, how could he have been sure that she would have went to him specifically, and then why did he change his mind in the end??

That's two questions. Bonus points if you can satisfy both with one answer.

Supporting the Christian Shephard was the potentiol adopting father - I went back to episode 10 - Raised by Another.

The first time Claire encounters Richard Malkin, he asks how long did she know she was pregnant and she says 2 days. He gives her back her money and she leaves.

Next encounter with Malkin he tells her she MUST raise the baby.

In the next flashback we see Claire telling Malkin to stop calling her and she even timelines it for us by saying he has been calling her for months.

It is not hard to believe Christian had hired a PI to keep an eye on Claire. The PI notices a huge amount of calls on her phone records from this Richard Malkin.

The investigator approachs Malkin and is told that he wants Claire to keep and raise her baby and not give it up for adoption.

Perhaps unaware of the psychic or not really caring about him, Christian attempts to talk to Claire. Christian is dissed by Aunt Lindsey.

--- So we go to plan B - this is the point where Christian gets involved with the psychic Malkin ---

Christian informed by his inveestigator approachs Malkin.

We have two roads we can go down here. If you believe the psychic is real and Christian believes it, he can tell him get her to L.A., I will make sure she raises the child. Or the psychis sees the maternal grandfather has the trait Claire has that is needed to keep Aaron safe.

But since we know there is no such thing as psychics, Christian makes Malkin a money offer ($10,000 hurley dollars) to have Malkin convince Claire to go to L.A.

Malkin offered Claire $12,000 and said this couple in L.A. could raise the child.

Claire asks Malkin why did you change your mind and allow me to give my baaabeee to strangers. Malkin then says the couple are **not** strangers (OK I could cut the sentence there but for accuracy Malkin continued), they are good people.

DONE, DEAL!

i want to know what is Locke's agenda? Is the island or smokey using Locke for it's plan? Locke is just acting too weird. Do you think he killed Patchy because he knew he was paralized? so many questions. i know we will get some answers in the next episode. i can't wait!

3/17/2007 12:22:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Awesome episode! Maybe even a bit better then last week, since last week the beach storyline wasn't that good but this week the beach storyline and the journey to o-town storyline were both interesting and there was a great balance between them.

One thing confusing me about this episode though is the whole Desmond/Charlie thing. I don't get it, if (as some theories suggest) Desmondo is in a time loop and is living all over again, then how come he didn't know eko would die and try to save him.
Anyway I did like Claire-the-bird-watcher sending the message with the seabird (Par Avion), though I wonder if it has any significance in the overall plot, maybe helping penny in some way.
Patchy said some interesting things before his brain exploded/imploded.
So you can't come back to the island, because the beacon for the sub stopped working after the sky turned purple (which it didn't really. It was more like a bright white light) but in the season 2 finale Benry told Michael that you won't be able to come back and that was just RIGHT AFTER the sky turned purple. Either it's a continuity error or that means that Ben knew that the hatch imploding would cause the beacon to stop working, which means that he knows a lot more about what happened then we might have thought.
Now lets talk about Locke I definitely think he threw Patchy through the pylons because he didn't want the knowledge that Patchy almost revealed that he was paralyzed to be known. I also think that we'll find out next week that Locke had something terrible happen to him and that if he gets off the island he won't be safe (plus he might be paralyzed again) and thats why he blew up the Flame hatch, 77 didn't blow it up, Locke did with the C4 that he found. Remember how there was a delay between the time that Locke entered 77 and the time which the hatch blew up. Locke doesn't want to get off the island and he'll do almost anything to keep it that way.

I think Locke was a kickboxer. He and Patchy fought for the UFC championship. He kicked Patchy in the eye and Patchy broke John's spine.

If I am not mistaken a similar story occured on Friends "The one with the glass eye and the broken spine"

Do you think Christian has the most crossovers as of now? According to survivorconnections.blogspot.com, Sawyer, Hurley, and Locke have 5 connections, but Jack has 7. But did Christian start the chain?

Christian connected with Ana Lucia who is connected with Jack, Jack is connected with Claire, who is connected with the Psychic, who is connected with Eko, who is connected with Libby, who is connected with Hurley, who is connected with Charlie, who is connected with Randy, who is connected wth Locke, who is connected with Nadia, who is connected with Sayid, who is connected with Shannon, who is connected with Boone, who is connected to Sawyer, who is connected back to Jack, who is connected to Desmond, who is connected with Charlie...

Okay, I don't even know where I'm going with this.

The question is - if the glass eye found by the tailees in Season 2 belongs to patchy how did it wind up in that hatch? I orginally thought the glass eye represented an eye for an eye because it was found near the bible.

Host a TalkShoe episode where the listeners can participate. The trick with that is managing the format to accomodate the numbers. Perhaps a LOST Lowdown SmackDown where listeners can come get the mic and 'debate' some aspect of the show with you two for 5minutes or so.

Heard about succession, good for you but I was hoping you'd consider an alternate channel feed.

The reality is that the biblical teaching was all about disregarding the "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" philosophy. Jesus was just disproving a well-known saying, not coming up with his own phrase.

radnac,
i'm thinking the old testament:

leviticus 24:18-24:20

18 Anyone who kills an animal shall make restitution for it, life for life.

19 Anyone who maims another shall suffer the same injury in return:

20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; the injury inflicted is the injury to be suffered.

wasn't eye for an eye orginally hammurabi? he was a babylonian king, and much of that culture was derived from older mesopotamian traditions. one of those older traditions is the story of gilgamesh. hmm...

Thank heavens I was in rehearsal until late and did not know what was at stake. By the time I checked back, the long awaited episode was there for me.

Maybe when we have a really boring episode (maybe never, but, surely) we can all trade ideas about the final scene of Lost. You know, the-island-says-enough-is-enough-and-blows-up type moments. Those really get me.

Hmm.. how will it end? They all contract an std (originating with Achara, transmitted to Jack, then Juliet, then Sawyer, then Kate, then Hurley, then Charlie, then Claire...) and go blind and insane from syphillis.
Vincent is the only one left. He waits for decomposition to set in (the dead bodies are left where they fall) and then bites off the arms of the dead. He then painstakingly contructs a Lostie Arm Dog House where he cooks naked omelettes with Christian, his new master.

Now, when does the 30 comment challenge begin? Next episode? Now?

You know, I always assumed that we would see Jack go over to the side of the others. Maybe he thinks with Kate 'gone', what does he have to lose? It just seems to good of a story to pass up to have the so called hero flip. I have always imagined that we will have a scene where Jack is in the middle of the Kate/Sayid/Locke crew and the Ben/Tom/Julia gang and chooses the way of the others. (Of course, I also always thought that Sawyer would sacrifice himself for Jack, further confusing Kate). Anyway, I predict that the Others will share some info with Jack that will cause him to freely choose to stick it out with them.

Paul,

Where else would you want to be buried? Next to Eko in the middle of no where?

Speaking of Eko, why didn't they bury him with the others in the "Grave of the Damned?"

i think i could manage in the cave with adam and eve. as long as hurley doesnt decide to become a hermit and move to the caves, afterall. i wouldnt want to haunt a naked, poo-throwing jumbotron.

claude,
maybe they didnt want to frighten the other survivors by schlepping his body out to the beach. or maybe he was just too damn heavy.

i agree. a dead nigerian is really the least of their worries. they have more important things to worry about. like, how did xerxes show up on the island?

Hey guys,

I just thought about this:
If Locke hadn't blown up the Flame Station, the communication would still be disabled; so there was no chance they could've got in contact with the outside world regardless of whether he blew it up or not!

claude,
the movies you were thinking of are the rescuers and the rescuers down under.

OK, while listening to you guys last night, i thought of a few theories.

You were discussing how Mikhail/Mikey/Mickey said he knew Locke, blah, blah, and then Danielle interrupted. You were going on about how Mickey and the Others could have read the files on the survivors; but how could they remember all those specific details? Well, going back to Not in Portland, we knew Ethan was spying on Juliet. We also know from Mickey and from Ethan going to Miami, that before the hatch imploded that the Others were able to leave and come back to the island at will .
My theory is that the Others know so much about the survivors because they have been spying on them individually all their lives in the real world. With all the connections that the survivors have with each other, why wouldn't they have some connections with the Others, too? Perhaps one Other was dedicated to tracking the life of one survivor (for reasons yet to be explained) and that Other is the go to guy for info on a particular survivor. This would explain how Colleen knew about Sun, how Mickey knew about Locke. Perhaps, Ms Klugh was tracking Walt.

I beleive that Jack was not on Jacob's list, not because he was flawed, but because he is TOO good to be on the list and something special is planned for him.

Lastly, I think that Jacob is NOT on the island. I think that he is off the island for some reason yet to be explained, and the Others are currently in a tailspin because they can't contact him. Jacob can't get back, but he is somehow going to infiltrate Penny's hired goons, or Penny herself, to find his way back.

Ok, let a 'real' podcaster tell you what happened with the whole 'bird situation'.

Desmond 'sees' events leading to Charlies death which include the net failing because he was hunting boar.

So... Des intervenes to get Charlie to avoid hanging with Claire 'stay away from my baby' Littleton. ...and then he has to proceed to keep the events in line or else risk a new future emerging so he fires off his gun to disrupt the birds. ...then he proceeds to where the 'docile' bird i schilling and captures it for Claire thus averting charlies death while still aquiring 'the bird'

OMG! I think you hit on something (finally :) The island is trying to off Charlie so he doesn't raise Aaron (raised by an other?)

curt,
so you believe charlie is an other? i have thought that too, but him hanging in the tree in season one keeps making me shy away from that idea.

Paul, my theory has always been that the second, "bad" group of Others were the ones that hung Charlie (possibly Nathan?); not Ethan. My evidence for that claim is the fact that Ethan himself threatened to kill Charlie LAST. Plus, the Others have said they are not killers. So Curt's theory is possible, but unlikely.

I don't think he is 'an other' per se but our psychic friend 'by another' which we took losely as 'the others'. If we stay loose as it were then charlie is 'somebody else'

ethan said that after he hung charlie up as a threat. i don't think it was about charlie, it was about getting claire back.
