5 year anniversary podcast! We may not mention it on the recording...
Yay, thanks a lot guys! I really need to check this site more often...
(I haven't quite finished the show yet, so forgive me if you talked about this!)
About how Desmond went into the flash-sideways in season six, other than the fact that he could survive the blast, I'm not sure if that had anything to do with his powers. His mind isn't travelling there the same way it travelled in this episode, rather he's simply exposed to a crazy amount of energy and has a near-death experience allowing him to temporarily perceive the afterlife. We see the same thing with Juliet's mind seeming to pop into the flash-sideways while she's dying.
It makes sense when you think about the fact that on-Island Desmond doesn't actually become enlightened about the flash-sideways. He acts a different, but not necessarily in an enlightened way, more like he has some kind of brain damage, which he probably would have if he almost died. On-Island Desmond doesn't realize what the flash-sideways is, he just thinks it's this nice place you get to go to when you're exposed to that nice bright light Widmore shined on him, which is why he tried to remove the cork in the finale and was upset when that didn't happen.
