Ben's two lines on the flight in this episode are awesome. They pretty much sum up his entire character.
His "Who cares?" exemplifies his cold and uncaring nature. But, who really does care? Jack, Kate and Sun go on Ajira 316 knowing it might crash, but they don't do anything about it. Even the audience doesn't care about these red shirts. The only one who does care is Hurley. Ironically, this is one of the few times where Ben is honest. Heartless, yes, but honest nonetheless.
In contrast, the line "My mother taught me" showcases the sardonic pathological liar. It also highlights Ben's mommy issues, that he wished his mother was there for him growing up.
